HIGNFY first appeared on BBC on 28 September 1990, with its regular panelists Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, joined by Sandi Toksvig and Kate Saunders respectively.  The show's host, as he was to be for the next twelve years, was Angus Deayton.

Revelations about Deayton's private life in 2002 (fnrr, fnrr) lead to his sacking.  At first the BBC's use of guest presenters was a stop gap measure, the intention being to eventually hire a permanent replacement. However, the 'new' format proved a hit with viewers and in June 2003 it was decided to continue with a different presenter each week.
